Further, Flaming Camels deal bonus damage for a total of 200 damage (before armor and blast distance are taken into account) against Elephant units, and are thus extremely lethal against packed groups of War Elephants.Īll of these factors make the War Elephant one of the most situational unique units in the game. Kamayuks will also trade cost-effectively with War Elephants. They can be easily converted by enemy Monks, especially as the Persians do not have access to Heresy, so they should always be deployed with ranged units or Light Cavalry. The War Elephant has enough durability to sometimes make it to the siege, so said siege should always be backed by Pikemen. Mangonels are effective against them, because the massive Elephants can hardly dodge the projectiles. Scorpions particularly do +6 (+8 for Heavy) bonus damage to War Elephants. Mamelukes, with their high speed and anti-cavalry bonus, are an effective method of fighting War Elephants.īecause they are big, move slowly and only have melee attack, siege weapons can be effective. Their slow speed also makes them vulnerable to Cavalry Archers, though it will take a while for the archers to kill them due to their high health and decent pierce armor. Enemy Pikemen can defeat them cost-efficiently, though it will take a large group to take them down. They are also one of the most expensive units in the game, with a very high training time for a Castle unit. Even against melee units, they often struggle to force an engagement, as even infantry can run away from War Elephants. However, they move slowly and are vulnerable to units that deal damage at long range as a result. These factors combined make the unit the most population-efficient in the game. Just a few buildings out further into the map will be terribly difficult for enemies to bring down once they are up.Īge of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is currently available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.War Elephants are one of the most durable units in the game with 620 hit points when fully upgraded (over three times the hit points of a Paladin), as well as high melee attack (24) and trample damage. Byzantines are likely to focus on cavalry units, so they usually have a fast-moving defensive force ready to leap into action, or to ride out guerrilla style to harass enemy forces before retreating to their heavily fortified bases. The Byzantines have access to every defensive building in the game, and technologically they have perhaps the widest tree available in the game as well. This makes it ridiculously hard to take them down, and when added to the fact that they get a third off the price of advancing to the Imperial Age, a quick player will be able to make Byzantine cities almost indestructible incredibly quickly.įor the defensive strategy known as turtling, there is no better force to take on. Byzantine buildings gain a huge bonus with each age to their HP, ending up at 40% by the Imperial Age. The Byzantines are well-known as an incredibly powerful civilization defensively. ![]() ![]() They even have a 33% bonus for the speed of building walls and castles, making it easy to advance with smaller bases across the map. Added to their powerful naval capabilities, which could be used on water-based maps to harass the enemy while holding back on land, the Koreans become a horrifying force to try and fight against. Their unique unit, the War Wagon, is also devastating in defense, as they are very durable and strong against support units. Placed alongside towers, a few of them will make opponents suffer heavily before getting near their targets. Their towers also upgrade automatically, and they gain a huge +2 bonus range from the Castle Age onwards, making it horribly difficult to even get close to the Korean base without taking heavy losses.Īdditionally, their unique technology increases the range of Mangonels, added to the bonus they already have naturally, this makes Mangonels ridiculously powerful. They can gather stone faster than other civilizations, meaning that their defenses such as towers can go up early and stay up throughout the game. The Koreans are both great for naval upgrades and are absolutely monstrous defensively.
