![]() ![]() It was a time when jazz as we knew it was in flux, and this included Brubeck. 1967 was the year that saw us lose John Coltrane, and though Miles Davis was at the height of his powers with his second great quintet, their run would end shortly after ‘67 and Davis would wander away from jazz into fusion. With Dave Brubeck, it’s all about the timing, and not just the strange tempos he played with in his music. This could be a result in differences in my equipment, though the two signal paths are comparable.I heard "Take Five" from the the new live CD today. I much prefer the sound of the digital version as the vinyl sounds muddy, with a narrower soundstage and reduced highs and lows. I also own the 2010 vinyl re-release by "music on vinyl" and just compared that directly to the Sony version by flipping inputs back and forth (digital version is 256kb AAC). My go-to is the 2009 Sony "Legacy" version for no particular reason. Very interesting, and I'm not sure which is supposed to be the "definitive" version. There are some major differences between releases, for instance between the 2009 Sony Music "Legacy Edition" and the 2013 BNF stereo release, there is a massive difference in how the cymbals are mixed, in the BNF version they are way up front and much louder then the Sony version where they are a more in the mix. I've listened to a smattering from Apple Music, focusing on the a passage from "Take Five" at the 1:30 mark where there is very prominent cymbal work combined with the horn, piano and bass all at once.
